[team sonic] push off

First words are from here. My email says I'm still in time!
The title is from Jump in the Pool by Friendly Fires. This is a companion piece to wells up. Happy Birthday [livejournal.com profile] xiukisses! It's just a little something and I honestly don't know but here it is.
This story's characters have all been age-swapped: Zishan is a freshman in university, Minseok and Lu Han are sophomores and Sehun is most likely some kind of alumnus.

Help me, he pleaded without words, Zishan dragging him away from the cafeteria table as Minseok eyed his half-finished sandwich and almost full coffee but Lu Han just shrugged, reaching across the table and taking a huge gulp, thumbs up as Minseok was pulled around the bend.

"But I don't want to meet your cousin's friend or whoever he is?" Minseok protested, a last ditch attempt to escape.

"But I want you to," Zishan said, her fingers around Minseok's wrist loose but strong, and Minseok knew there was no getting around it. You suck, he thought, aiming mental daggers back at Lu Han who hopefully spluttered on his coffee and spat out on the white surface of the table.

As they walked along the hallway, Minseok considered his options. He could easily pry his hand out of Zishan's grasp and run in the opposite direction, but she would be mad and since she was introducing him to a photographer who might be able to give him a summer job doing something that wasn't working at McDonalds or joining the city crew to wake up and four every morning and mow the endless growing grass—

He fell into step with her instead, arms swinging as she released her grip and tucked his arm under hers.

"You'll like Sehun," Zishan grinned, and sometimes it was hard to remember that she was only a freshman when she was always so older-sister-like. "Go on then! He knows you're coming!" She stopped in front of a door, slightly cracked open, and Minseok was left alone in the hallway, blinking.

"Zishan!!!" he hissed, but she was disappearing around the corner, and there was the sound of someone pausing on the other side of the door, an exhalation of breath perhaps? Before a voice drifted through the crack between the door and the doorframe.

"Are you coming in?" the voice said, and the lowness of the register surprised Minseok, who pushed open the door before he quite realized it.

There was a man standing, half in shadow, half in the light of an overhead lamp, fingers full of photographic prints, his blond hair falling over his face in crisp lines. Minseok's first thought was, he's tall. . .

"Hi," he said, stepping into the room and letting the door fall half shut behind him, the harsh florescent light from the hallway fading to a crack. "Zishan said you might be interested in hiring an assistant for the summer?" Minseok felt young, somehow, even though he was already a sophomore, almost a junior to be honest. He wondered how old Sehun was; Zishan hadn't said.

"What do you know about photography?" Sehun said, turning to fix Minseok with a stare. He didn't look like he was trying to be intimidating, just intensely focused—Minseok could picture him spending hours and hours hunched over, developing photos, hours and hours walking and waiting for the perfect shot.

"I'm a photography major," Minseok said, "and I've done some work for the University magazine." He didn't mention the prize he'd won a few months ago; it didn't seem like something Sehun would be interested in.

Sehun just looked at him for a few more moments, and Minseok wasn't sure if he'd said something wrong or what was going on. This is a complete loss, he thought, already steeling himself to head to the university employment offence because there was no way he was going home for the summer.

And then Sehun shifted, letting the photographs fall to the desk like drifting leaves as he reached down to pick up a gear bag that had been hidden in the shadows. Minseok's mouth watered at the sight. All those lenses. He wasn't paying attention, and was therefore caught off guard when Sehun dropped the bag in his arms. Minseok stepped back half a step, then steadied himself, regaining his balance. All those years of high school soccer were paying off.

"What—?" he started to ask, and then blinked. Sehun was grinning. Grinning. Minseok could feel his heart beating in his chest.

"You're hired," Sehun said, taking back the bag of gear. "I'll see you here on Monday?" And he somehow ushered Minseok out and waved goodbye before the door shut gently with a soft click.

Minseok blinked. He knew he should be elated that he'd gotten the job, but all he could think about was—that grin! and he just knew that Zishan had set him up, and that Lu Han that conniving jerk was probably involved somehow.

But he couldn't help smiling to himself as he walked back down the hallway. This summer is going to be so good.
